Construction of the VND 95-billion high-tech shrimp breeding center at Tra Vinh (07-03-2017)
On the 4th March 2017, at Duyen Hai Commune, Tra Vinh Province, People’s Committee of Tra Vinh Province and Thong Thuan Group organized groundbreaking ceremony of Thong Thuan – Tra Vinh high-technology shrimp breeding Center.
Currently, shrimp aquaculture in many provinces is facing challenges due to lacking of shrimp seeds. Tra Vinh is one of the provinces dependent heavily on shrimp seed from other provinces (over 70% of demand). As result, the quality of the seeds is not guaranteed and the price is high. It is also one of the disease spreading reasons in last few years.
To solve these challenges in supplying shrimp seed, Tra Vinh province has elaborated the Decision No 360/QD-UBND on planning of mass production of aquatic seeds by 2020, vision 2030. From this Decision, by 2020, Tra Vinh province made target of self-supplying 96.4% of aquatic seeds’ demand in the province.
Thong Thuan – Tra Vinh is the first high-tech shrimp breeding center of Tra Vinh province, located on a 10.2 ha plot, at a total capital of VND 95 billion. It is hoped to produce 5.5 billion larvae of white-leg shrimp, tiger prawn and giant freshwater prawn. Once being operational, the center would contribute to providing shrimp seeds not only within the province, but also for other neighboring provinces such as Ben Tre, Soc Trang, Ca Mau andBac Lieu. The first batch of high-quality shrimp seeds from the center is hoped to be available in October, 2017.
During the ceremony, Mr. Nguyễn Xuân Cường, Minister of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, appreciated the province’s efforts in bringing in private investment for the center, creating favorable conditions for agricultural restructuring and for exploiting the aquaculture potential efficiently. He urged the investor to complete the construction and start operations at the centre as scheduled, while taking care not to harm the environment.
In 2017, Tra Vinh province plans to stock 1.9 billion larvae of black tiger shrimp and 3 billion of white leg shrimp on an area of 18,000 ha and 6,000 ha respectively. The total shrimp production of the province is expected to gain 38,700 tons in 2017.
