Vietnam will have to compete more with India in seafood exports

India is aiming to triple the domestic seafood production by promoting the implementation of projects related to seed production. At present, India has 4 hatcheries built with the capacity to produce 250,000 freshwater fingerlings and 4.35 million seedlings. In addition, production farms in Kulathupuzha and Kanatharkulam were approved by the Indian Government to support 49 million rupees and 95 million rupees for the second phase. India has also approved plans to improve unused water resources for aquaculture, with an estimated 700 cage farms benefiting from this plan. Besides, the country intends to focus on promoting traditional black tiger shrimp farming in West Bengal, Kerala and Karnataka to boost shrimp export to the Japanese market, especially during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics - the event that is expected to boost seafood consumption in Japan.

According to the Agro Processing and Market Development Authority, seafood export value in March 2019 is estimated at US $ 645 million, bringing the value of seafood export in the first 3 months of 2019 to US $ 1.8 billion, up 0,5% over the same period in 2018. Japan, the US, China and South Korea are the top 4 import markets of Vietnam seafood in the first 2 months of 2019, accounting for 52.8% of the total seafood export value. The markets with strong seafood export value are Mexico up 35.6%; Philippines increased by 25%; Malaysia increased by 21.6%; UK increased by 16.6% and Canada increased by 13.7%. Also in March 2019, the value of seafood imports reached US $ 152 million, bringing the total value of imported seafood in the first 3 months of 2019 to US $ 416 million, up 2% over the same period in 2018.

Also according to the Agro Processing and Market Development Authority, in the domestic market, tra fish material in the Mekong Delta in March 2019 tends to fall sharply, currently only VND 24,000 - 25,000 / kg for tra fish 1st type (800- 900g / fish), down about 3,000 VND / kg compared to the previous month, because there are not many export orders. At the same time, the price of fingerlings also tends to go down in some areas, currently at 25,000 VND / kg for size 30 fish.

For the shrimp market, in March 2019, the price of fresh black tiger shrimp in the market tended to decrease after several days of continuous increase before and after the Lunar New Year. The price of black tiger shrimp also decreased because the export orders at the beginning of the year were not high, therefore, the enterprises reduced their buying prices. In Bac Lieu province, the price of live tiger shrimp (oxygen) of 20-40 unit / kg decreased by VND 40,000 - 70,000 / kg compared to the previous month, currently fluctuating at VND 190,000 - 300,000 / kg; iced black tiger shrimp size of 20-30 shrimp / kg is priced from VND 145,000-215,000 / kg, down VND 30,000 / kg. Prices of iced white leg shrimp have increased by VND 6,000-8,000 / kg over the previous month. Specifically, size 60 shrimp / kg cost VND 108,000 - 110,000 / kg; size of 70 shrimp / kg is priced at VND 98,000-100,000 / kg; size 100 per kg price VND 86,000 - 88,000 / kg.
