Squid and octopus export decreased by 7.8% (15-10-2018)

Vietnam’s export of squid, octopus has continued to decline in August. The export value of this month only reached nearly US $ 64 million, down 7.8% over the same period in 2017. However, thanks to the good growth in the previous months, total export value in the first eight months was up 3.5% over the same period, reached US $ 417 million.

Korea
After the decline in July, Vietnam’s export of squid, octopus to Korea has increased again. The export value to this market reached US $ 26 million, up 19% year on year, bringing the total export value in the first eight months to US $ 155 million, up 14% over the same period. Now, Korea is still the largest export market of squid, octopus of Vietnam, especially for fresh, frozen and dried/fermented octopus.

Japan
Export of squid, octopus to Japan is still very bleak. The export value to Japan in August continued to decrease 12% compared with August 2017, reaching US $ 14.5 million. However, due to the good growth in the first months of the year, total export value in the first eight months still increased by 0.7%, reaching US $ 95 million.

EU
Vietnam’s export of squid, octopus to the EU has continued to decline due to the influence of receiving "yellow card". In August, the value export of squid, octopus to this market was only US $ 7.8 million, down 24% over the same period in 2017. Thus, total export value of squid, octopus in the first eight months of the year still decreased 26% over the same period, reached US $ 54 million.

Italy, Spain and France have continued to be the three most importers of Vietnam’s squid, octopus in the EU. Inside, Vietnam’s export of squid, octopus to Italy and Spain have continued to decline, while exporting to France still increased over the same period.

ASEAN
In August, Vietnam’s export of squid, octopus to ASEAN increased again. Export value of Vietnam’s squid and octopus reached US $ 8.2 million, up 6.7% over the same period in 2017, bringing the total export value in the first eight months to nearly US $ 54 million, up 18% year on year.

Thailand and the Philippines are the two largest import markets of Vietnam’s squid, octopus in this market group. Comparing with the same period last year, Vietnam’s export of squid, octopus to these two markets increased over the same period. In particular, export of squid, octopus to the Philippines witnessed an impressive growth of more than 152%.

China
After a strong growth in the early months of the year, two months ago, Vietnam’s export of squid, octopus to China was slow down. Export value of squid, octopus to this market in August only reached US $ 3.7 million, down 57% over the same period last year, bringing the total value in the first eight months to nearly US $ 34 million, up 14% over the same period.
