Squid and Octopus export to ASEAN and China market (31-05-2018)

Squid continued to be the main export products of Vietnamese cephalopod in the first three months of 2018, accounting for 56 per cent of total export value, while octopus products accounted for 44 per cent. Of that, exports of dried/fermented/fresh/live/frozen octopus (HS code 03) accounted for the highest proportion of almost 34 per cent; followed by fresh/live/frozen squid (HS code 03) with 31.7 per cent. This year, thanks to abundant raw materials and high demand from the main import markets, Viet Nam has boosted its squid and octopus export.

According to the statistics of General Department of Viet Nam’s Customs, exports of Viet Nam’s cephalopod products to nine main markets (including Korea, Japan, EU, ASEAN, China and Hong Kong, US, Taiwan, Russia and Israel) all grew well over the same period of 2017
ASEAN: In March 2018, Viet Nam’s cephalopod exports to ASEAN reached US $ 6.1 million, up 19 per cent compared to the same period. As a result, the total export value to this market in the first three months of this year increased by 30 per cent to total US $ 16 million. Thailand was a major importer of Viet Nam cephalopod in ASEAN. Viet Nam’s cephalopod exports to Thailand in the first three months of 2018 were worth by US $ 12 million, up nearly 27 per cent.
China was the most important seafood importer of Viet Nam in 2017 with the strong growth in all seafood products including cephalopod. In the first three months of this year, cephalopod sold to this market hit US $ 9.6 million, up 176 per cent over the same period last year.
