At the same time, 1.5 billion pangasius fingerling of high quality will be supplied the whole province.

Mr. Duong Nghia Quoc, Chairman of the Vietnam Pangasius Association, said the plan of pangasius fingerlings or commercial pangasius must take into account the regional linkage. Currently, the plan of breeding pangasius of 3 levels must invest in infrastructure for the nursing area including building water system; irrigation including input, output; electricity system; environmental treatment.

In the past, people did not control their own production, even in the unplanned area, but many households still do. Therefore, it is necessary to rearrange breeding pangasius in order to stabilize farming areas and develop sustainably.

The two provinces of Dong Thap and An Giang were selected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) as the plan area for the production of 3-level pangasius fingerlings; In particular, Dong Thap province performs level 2 and level 3. Level 2 is the participation between enterprises and units producing fingerlings.

Level 3 includes the units that receive the pangasius posts from the second level to nurse to supply businesses and farms in the linked chain based on orders.

Since then, the province has concentrated on production and plans to invest in nursery production infrastructure, breeding pangasius broodstock, linking enterprises, sustaining the environment, solving the overproduction or being lack of pangasius fingerlings.

At present, Dong Thap province is aiming at producing high quality, stable and sustainable 3 level pangasius fingerlings to meet the demand of high quality breeds in the localities and provinces in the Mekong Delta. Accordingly, the fingerlings will have a brand and traceability.

Recently, pangasius fingerlings have been more than 60,000 VND/kg for 30 unit/kg size and down to 7,000 VND/kg in July 2018. This situation is caused by the widespread development of pangasius fingerlings while the pangasius exporters have basically bought enough fingerlings for breeding.

Mr. Quoc recommends that in raising pangasius fingerlings, people should not see the high price to focus on raising in a high number and should not raise pangasius outside the planning area. At the same time, no new ponds should be reared for rearing. People should not make use of the ponds having other fish species to produce pangasius fingerlings to reduce the risk of oversupply. It should be done in a sustainable manner to produce 3 levels of pangasius fingerlings.

Dong Thap is the largest pangasius fingerling producer in the Mekong Delta with 68 breeding facilities and 1,160 pangasius nurseries with an area of about 800 ha. Annually, the province supplies about 13 billion fry and 1.2 billion fingerlings for commercial productions to organizations and individuals inside and outside the province.
