Increasing 50% in tilapia farming productivity thanks to Biofloc technology (01-12-2022)

Tilapia cultured intensively in brackish water by Biofloc technology brings high efficiency with a survival rate of over 90% and a yield of 30 tons/ha.

Despite being an important object in the economic development strategy of fisheries, in recent years, Hai Phong City still applies the process of changing water in tilapia pond while the water is polluted due to waste in the pond increased.

In coastal areas, the number of inefficient aquaculture facilities is increasingly because diseases are easily spread through water sources.

To overcome this situation, the Institute of Marine Environment and Resources (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) has successfully researched and transferred technology to implement the model of intensive farming of tilapia using Biofloc technology with a scale of 0.5ha and 20 participating households.

The model was deployed in Tan Thanh ward, Duong Kinh district (Hai Phong city), in collaboration with Hoang Huong Seafood Company, from January 2022 to the end of 2022.

Scientists have conducted training for 40 people participating in the model to hold the techniques of intensive farming of tilapia in brackish water using Biofloc technology to apply to production.

On the other hand, focus on training 5 technicians who are technical staff of the project implementation unit (enterprise) and staff of Fisheries Extension Agency to master the processes of tilapia farming by Biofloc technology, master the technologies and techniques and have the capacity to replicate locally.

After the implementation period, the model gave relatively good initial results, it is expected that over 16 tons of commercial fish with size of over 500g/fish will be obtained, absolutely ensuring food hygiene and safety.

“In the past, I could only raise over 10 tons of fish/ha, but thanks to this technology, I can get up to 30 tons. Meanwhile, the food system is significantly reduced compared to before, only from 1.22 to 1.3, helping me save manpower and labor," said Mr. Nguyen Thai Hoang, Hoang Huong Seafood Company.

In the process of implementing the model, the enterprise, together with the Hai Phong Department of Science and Technology, the Hai Phong Agricultural Extension Center, and the inter-district Agricultural Extension Station, have strengthened coordination with related parties supported the project implementation effectively.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen Thu, Deputy Head of the Inter-District Agricultural Extension Station, said that the model has contributed to bringing new species of farming with high economic value to production, promoting the development of aquaculture.

Besides, the successful technology transfer also helps diversify the sector and improving the quality of social life of coastal people, create jobs, and help people gradually master technology in aquaculture.

“Products of the model will create a source of clean food to supply the market and Hai Phong city. At the same time, it is also a study destination for households in the coastal districts of the city to replicate the model, "said Ms. Thu.

Biofloc technology is capable of cleaning the pond environment, providing a natural food source and improving the efficiency of feed nutrient conversion.

Heterotrophic microorganisms will convert nitrogen-containing compounds in pond water into proteins in Biofloc, thereby reusing nitrogen from waste dissolved in pond water, converting it into biomass of natural food for fish farming, increasing the efficiency of using fish feed, reducing pollution.

Therefore, Biofloc technology is a new biotechnology solution that contributes to the development of the aquaculture industry towards sustainability, biosecurity and environmental friendliness.
