Binh Thuan: Implement A Community Model to Participate in Law Enforcement Monitoring Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing

Although initially achieved many results, illegal fishing still occurs in many places but has not been thoroughly prevented and handled. This is partially due to the fact that the fisheries management system of the province has not fulfilled the criteria and that there is a limitation of the personnel and means of patrol and control, so it has not yet managed and supervised comprehensively the assigned waters. If law enforcement relies only on the State's resources which is not enough, it will not bring high efficiency without the participation of the people and mass organizations, especially in monitoring activities. to participate in the fight to prevent and repel law violations\With the above situation, Binh Thuan Fisheries Association cooperated with Vietnam Fisheries Technology and Service Center (FITES) to implement the project on strengthening the role and connecting community resources in monitoring Fisheries Law Enforcement Supporting IUU Implementation which are funded by the Global Environment Fund, a small-project sponsorship program UNDP/GEF SGP in Vietnam. The overall goal of the project is to contribute to improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the implementation of the Fisheries Law, IUU fishing and removing the yellow card of the European Commission; creating a premise and basis for progressing towards building a sustainable and responsible fishery in Tan Thuan commune, Ham Thuan Nam district, Binh Thuan province in order to create a replication model for other localities in the province.

In the morning of November 4th, 2020, the project was started with the participation of leaders at all levels of authorities and organizations, local associations, Fisheries Department, Border Guard and representatives of community fishermen associations in Tan Thanh, Tan Thuan and Thuan Quy communes.
