Ba Ria - Vung Tau: Total aquaculture production increased by 8.89% (26-07-2017)

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, in the first 6 months of 2017, the total aquaculture production in the province reached 8,188 tons, up 8.89 per cent over the same period in 2016. .

Of which, the production of black tiger shrimp reached over 1,000 tons, the white leg shrimp reached over 623 tons, saltwater fish reached over 900 tons, the rest included other types such as freshwater fish, specialty fish and mollusks. Thanks to the good disease prevention action, no outbreaks of disease spread in the province.

Currently, the area of ​​cage farming in the province is shrinking due to many reasons, notably water quality is showing signs of deterioration, while the density of cage farming in farming areas was too high. At the same time, local authorities have not established self-management groups to ensure security as well as waste collection for hundreds of households culturing fish in these areas.

It is known that in the past years, by well utilizing advantages of over 300 km of coastline and the investment of the fisheries sector, Ba Ria - Vung Tau has become one of the big fishery centers of the country with more than hundreds of thousands of tons of fishes captured per year. Over the past years, the fisheries sector of the province has contributed significantly to the socio-economic growth of Ba Ria - Vung Tau.

The province also has step by step invested in the construction of material facilities, shifted fishery structure along the direction of offshore capture, development of intensive farming and improving the quality of seafood processing and exporting. With regards to capture fishery, the province’s fishing fleet was about 6,000 vessels, with the total capacity was 971,000 hp.

Most of the vessels have been equipped with advanced machinery and equipment. In addition to the growth in the number of offshore fishing vessels, there are also many new fishing methods which brought high revenue for fishermen such as ocean tuna fishing. Annually, capture sector created more than 30 thousand jobs for local people.

The province has also established some fish farming areas and other aquatic products for export with high value products such as pearls, snail and grouper in Con Dao district. Freshwater fish farming is concentrated in Vung Tau, Long Dien, Dat Do and Xuyen Moc districts.

In order to develop potential advantages in fishery sector, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has offered a number of solutions such as promoting the dissemination and education of legal knowledge while propagating local people to engage in protecting aquatic resources such as gradually remove the near-shore fishing means. In addition, the province is also actively developing and implementing a project to strengthen the conservation of marine biodiversity and protect the restoration of fisheries resources.
