Israel and Mexico – the two notable import markets of Vietnamese tuna in 2017 (07-02-2018)

In 2017, Viet Nam’s tuna exports reached US $ 592.8 million, increasing by 16.3 per cent over the previous year. Most of the export value to big markets saw a positive growth rate, except for Italy, Thailand and China.

US and EU continued to be the two largest export markets of Viet Nam’s tuna export with export value reaching US$ 225.7 million and US$ 141.9 million respectively, rising by 12.7 per cent and 23.1 per cent respectively compared with the previous  year. Particularly, US - the leading market of Viet Nam accounted for over 38 per cent of Viet Nam’s total tuna export value.

In the US market, Thailand, Indonesia and Viet Nam were the three largest suppliers of tuna products. Of which, skipjack tuna, Atlantic tuna (HS 160414) has the largest import share, with an average of 13,000 to 20,000 tons per month. This item is also the strength of many suppliers such as Thailand, China, Ecuador, Viet Nam, Indonesia or Fiji.

Next was the EU market. In 2017, Viet Nam’s tuna exports to this market also saw a strong increase of 23.1 per cent compared to 2016, accounting for nearly 24 per cent of Viet Nam’s total tuna export. In particular, tuna export value to Italy decreased by 2 per cent while that to Germany and the Netherlands increased strongly by 24.4 per cent and 46.8 per cent over the previous year.

In 2017 Israel and Mexico were two markets with notable growth. By the end of 2017, Israel surpassed ASEAN, Japan and China to become the third largest market of Vietnamese tuna export, only after US and EU markets. Export value to this market reached US$ 44.2 million, a strong increase of 70.2 per cent. Also, export value to the Mexican market registered an impressive growth with export value reaching US $ 13.55 million, an increase of 61 per cent compared to 2016.

It is forecasted that in the first quarter of 2018, the value of tuna exports to some big markets such as the US, EU and Israel would continue to grow by 15-30 per cent over the same period last year. Tuna export value to some Asian markets such as China and Thailand would slightly decrease compared to the same period of 2016.
