Fisheries production in the first five months up 3.7 per cent (05-06-2017)

According to D-FISH, the country’s fisheries production in May 2017 was estimated at 692 thousand tons, an increase of 5.8 per cent year on year. Of this figure, fishing production reached 311 thousand tons, up 5.2 per cent and aquaculture yield gained 381 thousand tons, up 6.3 per cent.

Also, fisheries production in the first five months of this year was estimated at 2.6 million tons, increasing by 3.7 per cent compared to the same period last year and fulfilling 37.7 per cent of the year’s plan. Of which, the catch amounted to 1.3 million tons, rising by 4.3 per cent and meeting 45.2 per cent of the year’s plan. Aquaculture production gained over 1.2 million tons, fulfilling 31.9 per cent of the year’s plan and increasing by 3.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.

This result was attributable to the favorable weather for both aquaculture and fishing. Besides, fuel price saw a slight decline, coupled with seafood price increased encouraged fishermen to go fishing.

Regarding fishing, the catch in May was estimated at 311.3 thousand tons, an increase of 5.2 per cent, making up total catch in the first five months of this year 1.35 million tons. Of this figure, marine catch was 1.28 million tons and inland fishing yield was 71.5 thousand tons, an increase of 4.4 per cent and 1.1 per cent respectively compared to the same period last year.

With respective to aquaculture, as of 29th May 2017, tra fish farming area was 2,868 ha, equal to 99.6 per cent compared to the same period last year. Tra fish production reached 433.757 tons, reducing 1.3 per cent year on year. The price of tra fish was VND 24,950 per kilo, increasing by VND 3.975 per kilo compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, shrimp farming area in the first five months of this year reached over 605 thousand ha, increasing by 8.2 per cent year on year. Of which, black tiger shrimp and white legged shrimp farming areas were nearly 570 thousand ha and over 35 thousand ha, respectively. Shrimp production was estimated at 141.9 thousand tons, an increase of 21.8 per cent compared to the same period last year. Of which, black tiger shrimp and white legged shrimp yields were respectively over 83 thousand tons and 58 thousand tons.

Regarding exports, according to Viet Nam Customs, as of 15th May 2017, the country’s seafood export gained US$ 2.46 billion, up 12.4 per cent year on year and fulfilling 34.6 per cent of the year’s plan. Particularly, shrimp export in the first five months of this year reached US$ 1.126 billion, up 2.3 per cent year on year. Tra fish export value saw a slight increase of 1.3 per cent, tuna export value increased by 22.9 per cent, exports of fish of all kinds estimated at 11.8 per cent, etc.
