Canada Aids Almost $11 Million in Boosting the Food Safety for Development in Vietnam (03-12-2020)

Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issued a Decision approving the project on Food safety for development – SAFEGRO which is funded by the Government of Canada without a refund. The project has a grant funded by the Government of Canada of 15.3 million Canadian dollars, equivalent to 10,904,055 USD.
Canada Aids Almost $11 Million in Boosting the Food Safety for Development in Vietnam

The project aims to support the development and enforcement of food safety regulations that are based on science and a risk-based approach. The project will also attract producers (including smallholder farmers) and the private sector to promote smart and environmentally friendly agricultural production, and develop a sustainable traceability system.

Towards raising awareness of food safety for consumers and promoting behavioral change that will lead to increased demand for and consumption of safe and affordable agricultural products in Vietnam. Specifically, the performance of central and provincial management agencies in implementing food safety regulations and policies in order to conform with international standards has increased.

This project will enable central and local authorities, who have the opportunity to access and benefit from experience, as well as new technologies, advanced food quality and safety management approaches from research organizations, Canadian business companies, to strengthen their ability to implement food safety regulations and policies.

The competitiveness of producers/farmers, value chain actors in both domestic and international markets will be enhanced through improved food safety.

Consumers are empowered to increase demand for safe and affordable food products in Vietnam.

The project would support to achieve significant progress on gender equality, especially women participating in the value chain of agricultural, forestry and fishery production.

It also supports producer behavior change, promote environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices, in particular greenhouse gas emissions.

The project has a grant funded by the Government of Canada of 15.3 million Canadian dollars, equivalent to 10,904,055 USD. The implementation period is from 2020 - 2025 in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and other provinces and cities.

The project’s expected results are to improve the interests of consumers and stakeholders in the agricultural and food sector, including poor farmers in Vietnam. The project has three main components as following: (1) Creating a main environment favorable policies, improving the effectiveness of law enforcement of central and local management agencies in Vietnam on food safety in selected value chains to meet international standards; (2) Improving the competitiveness of production and business establishments, including smallholders, poor farmers and other actors participating in the value chain, especially women in Vietnam to supply safe agricultural food for domestic and international markets; (3) Increasing consumer demand for safe and affordable agricultural products in Vietnam.

The National Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department shall assume the prime responsibility and coordinate with specialized agencies of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Industry and Trade; The Directorate of Fisheries and related agencies who are responsible for implementing the project.
