Ca Mau held a hand-over ceremony of 500 blocks of reefs and equipment for the project of artificial reefs on the seawaters of Ca Mau province (01-09-2020)

On July 10, 2020, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau Province in coordination with the Consulate General of Thailand in Ho Chi Minh City, also the People's Committee of Tran Van Thoi district held the han-dover ceremony of 500 artificial reefs and equipment for the project of a release of artificial coral reefs to protect and reproduce fisheries resources combined with tourism development in the sea area of Ca Mau province.

This project aims to help fishermen in the coastal area of Ca Mau province overcome challenges of decrease in fisheries resources, especially the decline in fish production due to effects of climate change.

At the ceremony, Mr. Apriat Sugondhabiron, Consulate General of Thailand in Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized that Implementation of the project has manifested a confidence and a sustainable partnership not only between Thailand and Ca Mau province, but also among local communities. The artificial reef project will positively contribute to the development of coastal fisheries resources in Ca Mau province, food security and economic benefits for both Thailand and Vietnam in general.

Mr. Chau Cong Bang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau Province said the project of releasing artificial reefs will help to raise the awareness of people, as well as to give support to government agencies in bringing out solutions to manage, protect, exploit and develop artificial coral reefs. Also, the project will contribute to develop biodiversity and reproduce fisheries resources for sustainable development of marine capture fishseries in long term.

Under a framework of the project which will be implemented for 12 months in the area  of the Western seawater located in 2 communes of Khanh Binh Tay and Khanh Binh Tay Bac belonging to Tran Van Thoi district of Ca Mau province where artificial reefs will be released (away from Hon Da Bac about 14km).

Release of artificial coral reefs is considered as one of the most effective measure to protect and restore resources, to create the habitat that draw attention of more fisheries species for living. Release of artificial reefs has been popularized in many countries around the world, and in Vietnam, this measure has also been deployed in some provinces. This is an action which is friendly with environment and contributes to protection of fisheries resources, also stabilizing of livelihoods for fishermen living in coastal areas.
