Development of aquaculture in the North region

Reported at the Conference “Development of aquaculture in the North region” by the Directorate of Fisheries recently, in the first 9 months of 2018, the area of aquaculture in the northern provinces reached 228,891 hectares, equal to 135.8% over the same period in 2017; Output reached 592,273 tons, equal to 109% over the same period last year. Breed production in the area reached 62.7 billion fries/shrimp posts.

Kim Van Tieu, Deputy Director of the National Center for Agricultural Extension emphasized that northern aquaculture in particular and aquaculture in Vietnam in general have many advantages but still face some difficulties, challenges which can be encapsulated in “5 difficulties” that is difficulty with markets; difficulty with capital; difficult with science and technology application; difficulty with breeds; difficulty with chain links.

To solve this problem, many solutions are proposed such as low interest loan policy, raising the loan limit for aquaculture development projects, investment in upgrading infrastructure, irrigation systems, roads and industrial electricity for concentrated aquaculture areas of high economic value. In addition, it is necessary to develop models of applying science and technology to nurseries, breeding of traditional, indigenous and new varieties; vocational training to raise aquaculture knowledge for farmers; trade promotion and removal of trade barriers in parallel with the development of the domestic market, minimizing risks from the markets...

Mr. Tran Dinh Luan, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Fisheries, said that the northern provinces have diverse natural terrains and can develop many types of aquaculture such as cage aquaculture in reservoirs, rivers, streams, ponds, integrating farming in rice fields and diversifying species, development of valuable specialty fisheries; Some areas may develop key species such as tiger shrimp, whiteleg shrimp, garrupa, perch, sea bass,.... for exports, large domestic consumption market and tourism.  The basic infrastructure is quite developed; people's intellectual level is quite high, capable of receiving technology ... However, besides, there are still many limitations, which need solutions to overcome, in which the application of science and technology is very important, cage technology and river technology in ponds should be considered. In addition, localities, associations, businesses and farmers need to work together to create synergy to further develop aquaculture in the North region.
