Vietnamese seafood contributes 3.43% of the national GDP (21-08-2019)
In the first 6 months of 2019, Vietnam's aquaculture production reached nearly 2 million tons (up 7.0% compared to the same period in 2018).
Vietnam’s position in aquaculture production and processing industry in the world is currently quite high, after only to China, Indonesia and India. That is the information given at the press conference “Vietnam International Seafood Exhibition and Conference” held in Can Tho City on August 15. The exhibition is an opportunity for domestic and foreign units to introduce new technologies and innovations in the fishing industry from production to processing and packaging.
In the first 6 months of 2019, aquaculture production reached nearly 2 million tons (up 7.0% compared to the same period in 2018). In particular, shrimp production was estimated at nearly 300,000 tons, tra fish was nearly 700,000 tons (equal to 107.5% compared to the same period in 2018). In addition, other types such as tilapia, mollusks, lobster and marine fish also achieved positive results.
Ms. Rose Chitanuwat - Project Manager of UBM Asia Group (ASEAN region) commented: “The Government of Vietnam in the past has supported and created the best conditions to promote sustainable aquaculture through various policies and mechanisms”. Vietnam is also the fourth largest country in aquaculture production and processing industry, after China, Indonesia and India.
Dr. Nguyen Viet Thang - Chairman of Vietnam Fisheries Association (Vinafis) informed that the fisheries sector is currently being identified as one of Vietnam's key economic sectors, contributing up to 3.43% of national GDP and 23.75% of Vietnam's agricultural GDP. However, this industry is still facing many difficulties, such as climate change, saline intrusion or prolonged drought, greatly affecting aquaculture farmers.
