ASEAN develops regional ecology tuna labels (27-11-2018)

Indonesia has endorsed and supported the ASEAN Tuna Ecology Labeling (ATEL) Policy during the ASEAN Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF) Meeting in Hanoi.

The Indonesian Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs said setting up ATEL to enhance the competitiveness of the ASEAN tuna industry in the world market by building ASEAN tuna brands to be sustainable and traceable products.

ATEL is the branding formulation for ASEAN tuna products and is a modification of existing eco-label certification which is becoming an obstacle when they come to retail markets of the developed countries.

During this annual meeting, Indonesia has expressed its commitment to continue to support efforts to enhance food security and food safety in the ASEAN region.

Indonesia has adopted responsible fishing practices by avoiding illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, and maintaining the quality of fishery products.

In addition, the Asian country has adopted a regulation on the provision of documentation of all captured and traceable fishery products, including aquaculture products.
