Fisheries production in the first quarter up 2.2 per cent (04-04-2017)

According to the Directorate of Fisheries (D-FISH), country’s fisheries production in March reached 450.6 thousand tons, an increase of 2.1 per cent year on year. This brought the figure in the first 3 months of this year to 1,3 thousand tons, up 2.2 per cent compared to the same period last year.

This result was attributable to the favorable weather for both aquaculture and fishing.

Regarding fishing, the weather was rather favorable on the fishing grounds, couple facilitating the fishermen to go fishing. As a result, fishing production in March gained 248 thousand tons, an increase of 2.2 per cent, making up the fishing production in the first quarter 746 thousand tons.

With respective to aquaculture, shrimp farming area in the first three months of this year reached over 518 thousand ha, of which, black tiger shrimp and white legged shrimp farming areas were over 502 thousand ha and 16 thousand ha, respectively.

As of 17th March 2017, tra fish farming area was 2,025 ha, reduced by 7.1 per cent. However, its production reached about 191 thousand tons, up 6.8 per cent compared to the same period last year. Since early this year, tra fish price has seen an upward trend. This is a positive sign for tra fish farmers.

Aquaculture production in March reached 202.6 thousand tons, up 2 per cent compared to the same period last year. This brought the figure in the first quarter to 567 thousand tons.

In 2017 Viet Nam’s fisheries sector targets its fisheries production at 6.85 million tons, including fishing and aquaculture yield of respectively 3.05 million and 3.8 million tons.In order to realize this target, Vice-Minister of MARD Vu Van Tam asked relevant agencies to focus on implementing main tasks in April and the coming months. Regarding aquaculture, it should develop blackish water shrimp farming by enhancing stocking shrimp seeds on the remaining farming areas. Also, the quality of shrimp seeds, inputs and diseases on shrimp should be better controlled and information about markets should be updated for farmers. Besides, Mr Tam asked D-FISH to collaborate with the National Center for Agriculture Extension in organizing a workshop on management of shrimp seed quality and co-operate with Department of Animal Health in controlling disease and reviewing lobster farming in the Center coastal provinces.

Regarding capture fisheries, Mr Tam asked agencies to complete recovery of fishing activities in the 4 coastal provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue by implementing the project of recovering ecosystems in 4 provinces. Also, he assigned Department of Capture Fisheries under D-FISH to organize a workshop on reviewing the North fishing season and implementing the South fishing season in 2017. Apart from this, he asked Department of Capture Fisheries to co-operate with relevant units in implementing training course for farmers to raise their awareness of illegal fishing.
