Promoting the potential of key aquaculture species (21-01-2019)

Black tiger shrimp, white leg shrimp and tra fish are identified as three key aquaculture species. In order to promote the potential of these species, bring high value, according to Deputy Director General of Directorate of Fisheries Tran Dinh Luan, it is necessary to pay attention to the implementation of registration of farming management.
Promoting the potential of key aquaculture species

Recently, according to Decision No. 50/2018 / QD-TTg, black tiger shrimp, white leg shrimp, and tra fish are targeted as the main aquaculture species. These are items that contribute to creating many jobs and high income for workers, promoting the efficiency of natural resources, natural conditions of the country and being able to adapt to climate change; At the same time, they are also species with high productivity and production efficiency, able to attract investment to create large-scale concentrated production areas, creating high value-added products and the ability to compete with aquatic products of other countries on the domestic market as well as for export.

According to Mr. Tran Dinh Luan, to bring into play the potential of key aquaculture species, bringing higher value to these items, it is necessary to manage the farming of these species. On the one hand, it can meet the demand and supply balance, on the other hand helps to advance responsible production, traceability required by importing countries, especially for EU countries that required the traceability of aquaculture area as the EU and the US.

Along with it, it needs to go with a support policy. Currently, the nation is implementing a series of tasks related to shrimp and tra fish. In particular, for tra fish products, the Directorate of Fisheries is building a support program for businesses to build high quality tra fish fillet brand; Conducting research to add more nutrients to make tra fish fillets of higher quality.

"The research aimed to improve the whole process of processing technology for our tra fish fillet products so that it (tra fish fillet) has the quality that equivalent to high quality salmon products of Norway. In addition, there are studies to promote the use of products of the whole chain, such as better handling the waste of tra fish culture”- Mr. Tran Dinh Luan stressed.

According to Mr. Luan, for tra fish, it is necessary to pay attention to the issues of research on breeding, replacing broodstock to improve quality and traceability, at the same time, improving value-added processing products, which take advantage of the byproducts of processing.

Similar to shrimp products, there are now a series of studies and proposals for businesses to coordinate the implementation of breeding white leg shrimp and black tiger shrimp so that in the shortest time, Vietnam can be active in broodstock of shrimp. This is also one of the “bottlenecks” of our shrimp industry.

Another note to consider is the improvement of farming process, according to Mr. Luan, and how to apply high technology and application of farming scale. “We order research on farming scale suitable for Central provinces in on sand shrimp farming, or suitable farming procedures for provinces in the Mekong Delta” - Mr. Luan said.

In particular, in order to look forward to the new development of the shrimp industry, Vietnam's advantages with a huge area of 600 thousand hectares of all farming methods such as extensive shrimp farming, shrimp – rice farming, and shrimp – forest farming should be utilized to make research available. This area serves as a basis for building and developing Vietnam's organic shrimp brand.

Another part is the study to make good use of the byproducts of the shrimp processing industry, with a large volume that is going to be used to produce functional and pharmaceutical products for the health industry and many other fields. However, it requires time to conduct research.

Remarkably, it is important to build good connection between producers and processors, in which, to have a good source of raw materials, it needs to well manage farming areas, meeting the standards and regulations set out.
