Forum on application of science and technology in high-quality tra fish farming at Mekong Delta (21-12-2018)

On November 21, 2018, the Directorate of Fisheries has cordinated with the An Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to organize the Science and Technology Forum "High-quality tra fish farming at Mekong Delta Provines".
Forum on application of science and technology in high-quality tra fish farming at Mekong Delta

Tra fish is one of the main export products of Vietnam fishery, the output of tra fish products have recovered and even increased dramatically over the years. Tra fish has played an important role in the export of Vietnamese seafood, contributing to tackling the unemployment, especially in the Mekong Delta.

In 2017, the tra fish farming area reached 5,230 hectares, increasing by 3.5% over the same period in 2016. Tra fish production in 2017 grew to 1,250 thousand tons, up 5.1% over the same period in 2016. Tra fish export value reached US $ 1.78 billion, an increase of 4.3% compared to 2016, contributing 21.45% to the total export value of the fishery sector. The price of tra fish stayed high, ranging from VND 21,500 to 30,000 /kg in 2017 and at the beginning of 2018. With the high price of Tra fish, farmers have expanded the aquaculture area. As a result, either the demand for Tra fish or the price of fish seed also increased. The Directorate of Fisheries has set a turnover target in general in 2018 is US $ 10 billion, an increase of 17.9% over 2017. In particular, it was set targets of 3 million tons of tra fish output, about 2.2 billion seed and the export turnover of tra fish in 2018 is expected from US $ 2.0 to 2.2 billion.

Tra fish exports in October 2018  continued to increase sharply to US $ 255 million, climbing by 54% and bringing total turnover in the first 10 months to US $ 1.8 billion, up 24% over the same period last year. The price of tra fish fingerlings and tra fish material increases sharply, it is because of the lack of supply. This trend will be remained until the end of this year.

Despite some positive signals, the Viet Nam tra fish industry is facing many challenges in the development process such as the lack of quality of breeding, unsatisfactory supply, untighted management, high barriers to trade, communication of some countries that affect the prestige and brand name of Vietnam tra fish products; the difficult policy of investment in infrastructure, capital support for production Applying science and technology to create added value products have not been paid enough attention;

In order to solve the problems and to develop the sustainability of the tra fish industry, the participants had discussed and gave some solutions to improve the efficiency of policy, management. The speakers from different organizations and research institutes have introduced some new scientific and technological research results in tra fish production and process sector; Effective production processes in high-quality tra fish farming in the Mekong Delta help farmers to adapt and adopt the most effective farming processes. In addition, scientific and technological applications have been introduced to improve the quality as well as reduce production costs to get business efficiency. Participants said that the application of science and technology to improve the quality of breeding as well as increase the added value in products is an urgent issue for the tra fish industry.

Furthermore, Deputy Director of the DARD of An Giang Province Ms. Vo Thi Kim Van has stated that the project "Joint production of high-quality tra fish seed for the Mekong Delta in An Giang" is a breakthrough to create high-quality tra fish breeding in the Mekong Delta. Thereby, it can create high-quality tra fish products to meet the export standards.

Mr. Tran Dinh Luan had echoed the statement that the current world market is likely to support the export of tra fish. Barriers to the US market have been resolved while demand from the Chinese, US, and EU markets have the tendency to increase. Especially, the demand for food imported products in other countries has increased in the festivals of Christmas, New Year, etc. in the last months of the year. To achieved the objectives in 2018, localities should concentrate on solutions to stabilize production, focus on strict management of production conditions and quality of fish products according to regulations as well as strictly control the quality of breeding. It is necessary to encourage local businesses to invest in research and production of high-quality tra fish and implement the project on 3-level tra fish species approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. In conclusion, focusing on the application of science and technology to high added value production is an effective proactive practical method.
