Waking up potentials of aquaculture in coastal Go Cong (27-08-2018)

Tien Giang province has two districts which are contiguous to the South China Sea with great potentials in bracking fish exporting culture and fresh water exporting fish culture, namely Go Cong Dong and Tan Phu Dong.
Waking up potentials of aquaculture in coastal Go Cong

Particularly, Go Cong Dong has identified shrimp and clam as two important types of seafood needing attention.

Go Cong Dong district has a coastline of 32 kilometers, Soai Rap outfall in Soai Rap river in the North and Tieu outfall in Tien river in the South. It is a potential region for aquaculture with high value of consumption and export and many popular species in the market such as sugpo prawn, shrimp, clam and sea crab.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Qui, manager of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Go Cong Dong District, the local authorities are interested in exploiting the potentials of land, labor and business of coastal districts for sustainable socio-economic development, in helping agriculture – farmers – rural areas change their appearance, becoming more and more strong on the challenges of apparent climate change. Especially, waking up potentials of aquaculture in coastal Go Cong is consider as a top priority.

Depending on specific characteristics of each region, localities encourage farmers to bring up suitable species. For example, shrimps can be raised near estuaries or inside coastal levee; rice or other plants and livestocks cannot be raised in salty areas; clams can be raised in Tan Thanh areas which is contiguous to Tieu outfall in Tien river system.

Over the years, Go Cong Dong has succeeded in establishing clam culturing range of nearly 2,000 hectares of Tan Thanh coastal drift. On average, the culturing area reaches nearly 20,000 tons of clams annually for consumption and processing for export. Recently, the locality has combined clam culture with the development of marine ecotourism in Tan Thanh commune to contribute to solving employment, reducing rural poverty and building new rural areas.

One of the many farmers building their business from commercial clam culture for a long time is Mr. Tran Van Chi, who lives in Tan Phu hamlet, Tan Thanh commune. His family began clam culture in 1989, reaching nearly 30  years up to now.

Initially he raised the clam in a small area to learn by experience. Not until he saw success did he multiply the wide culturing area. Currently, Mr. Tran Van Chi owns 6 hectares of clam culturing area. On average, he earns over half a billion VND each year from the coastal Tan Thanh clam, becoming one of the billionaires in Tan Thanh.

After building business from the coastal Go Cong clam, Mr. Tran Van Chi also helps two poor households, Mr. Ngo Minh Hiep and Mr. Nguyen Minh Hoang, in terms of capital and techniques to develop cattle rasing to get out of poverty. Mr. Chi was honored to receive the Prime Minister’s certificate of excellent manufacturing – business achievement and a kind heart for the community.

According to Mr. Le Quoc Minh, the Vice Chairman of Tan Thanh commune People’s Committee, thanks to the good exploitation of economic potentials, which pays attention to aquaculture and marine tourism development, the locality has increased income per capita to 39.5 million VND per year and has reduced the poverty rate to 3.83%. In the beginning of 2018, Tan Thanh was also recognized as a new standard commune.

In addition, thanks to the State’s incentive policies such as: agricultural stimulation, technical transfer, culturing area and consuming market planning,... salted-water and bracking shrimp culture is developing in coastal and estuarine communes of Go Cong Dong district, contributing to solving employment, income of laborers. Many households from the hardship have been wealthier after a few bumper crops.

Mr. Tran Quang Thanh, living in Xom Ray, Kieng Phuoc commune is a typical case. Mr. Thanh is a retired soldier in the local. In response to the State’s policy, he learns techniques and converts two hectares of saline land into shrimp culture area.

Thanks to having a thorough grasp of the process, selecting good breeds without disease, learning from actual experience after each crop..., every crop of Mr. Tran Quang Thanh is greater than usual. On average, the production reaches nearly 10 tons of commercial shrimps each year. After deducting expenses, he has the net profit of 300 – 400 million VND. Thanks to the high income from shrimp culture, Mr. Thanh’s family has overcome difficulties, escaped from poverty and become a millionaire in such difficult coastal area.

Mr. Tran Quang Thanh has not only succeeded in shrimp culture for many “unbeaten” years but also become a kind-hearted example for the community, especially in reducing rural poverty. On average, he contributes over 50 million VND each year to help poor households, infrastructure and rural transport in the area of Kieng Phuoc.

Another similar case is Mr. Pham Van Tanh, who lives in Phuoc Trung commune, Go Cong Dong district. Mr. Tanh has converted 1.5 hectares of saline land along Tien river into shrimp culture area. Initially he specialized in sugpo prawn culture. Later, depending on the market demand and price of commercial shrimp, he cultured “the” shrimp or a combination of sugpo prawn and “the” shrimp.

According to Mr. Tanh, after deducting expenses, the net profit each year is over 400 million VND, which is many times higher than the previous rice crop. Thanks to the high income from sugpo prawn and “the” shrimp culture, he bought additional 1 hectare of land, raising the total land fund to 2.5 hectares.

According to the pioneering and successful farmers in coastal shrimp culture, Mr. Tran Quang Thanh and Mr. Pham Van Tanh, one of the factors that help farmer succeed is  selecting good breeds without disease, making proper treatment of shrimp ponds, maintaining a good culturing environment and mastering necessary scientific knowledge of shrimp and shrimp culturing process, disease treatment...

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Qui, in the first half of 2018, the district has built two models on shrimp culture.  They are model of microbiological application with bottom gas in litopenaeus vannamei culture and model of two-phase application of high technology associated with consumption in litopenaeus vannamei culture. These two models are implemented in Tan Thanh coastal commune.

In 2018, Go Cong Dong has provided 3,555 hectares of water surface for aquaculture, mainly in salt water and brackish water areas, including 880 hectares for shrimp culture, 2,000 hectares for clam culture and the remaining area for fresh-water fish culture. Since the beginning of the year, Go Cong Dong has harvested from the culture nearly 12,000 tons of different species of shrimp and fish. The locality tries to reach the annual production of about 24,000 tons of shrimp and fish for consumption and export.
