Kien Giang: Orientation of marine aquaculture development (15-08-2018)

Kien Giang has a coast line of about 200 km, which is a major advantage of this province in the development of marine economy. Taking advantage of this, many localities in the province develop aquaculture, which brings high income. These are important prerequisites for the development of the marine aquaculture industry and contribute to the overall economic development of the province.
Kien Giang: Orientation of marine aquaculture development

To promote the coastal economic potential, Kien Giang province has focused on marine fish farming. The main marine fish farming in the province is the type of fish cage farming in the sea with some fish species such as butterfish, grouper, cobia... concentrated in the districts of Kien Hai, Phu Quoc, Kien Luong and Ha Tien town. In 2017, the number of fish cages in Kien Giang province is 2,848 cages, output of 2,720 tons, increasing nearly 1.4 times compared to 2013; The plan for 2018 is 3,000 cages, yielding 3,200 tons. In addition, farmers in Kien Luong, An Bien, An Minh, Hon Dat districts, Ha Tien town also farmed groupers and seabass with nearly 200ha in ponds. Recently, there are models of raising butterfish and Sciaenops ocellatusin Phu Quoc with Norwegian technology for very high productivity of about 30 - 40 tons/cage. The pearl farming in Phu Quoc island district is developing stably with the area of 50ha. In the first 6 months of 2018, pearl farming enterprises in Phu Quoc island district harvest 54,500 pearls.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kien Giang province, the province has a large area of sea water, which is a favorable sea environment for developing aquaculture. Labor supply is sufficient for coastal aquaculture. However, fish farming in the sea has many difficulties such aspeople do not take initiative in fingerlings production; fingerlings is lack in terms of quantity; The linkage production-consumption is still weak. Almost farmers raising fish in cages are based on the traditional style of wood materials, which is in high risk. The food source for fish in the sea is mainly trash fish with many implications, especially the disease spread on aquaculture. Mollusc culture is more vulnerable to storms, and tropical depressioncause damage during the culture process.

Facing with that situation, Kien Giang Province has developed an aquaculture project on the sea towards industrial efficiency and sustainability on the basis of supplementing the current planning of the province; To carry out the linkage chain of cage fish farming in Hon Nghe commune (Kien Luong), rearranging small and scattered cages, attaching importance to the cooperative economic model to ensure mutual benefits and assistance in production.

Along with that, the assignment and lease of marine areas for aquaculture and sea aquaculture licensing are implemented in accordance with regulations. At the same time, models of commercial aquaculture based on modern technology, suitable conditions of farming area are built.

In addition, the province has gradually moved from using trash fish as feed for fish cage farming to industrial food for taking initiative in food and contributing to the protection of local fisheries resources. The agricultural sector of Kien Giang province has proposed to set up mechanisms and policies to encourage and support the establishment of cooperative models in fish cage farming, creating mechanisms and policies for enterprises applying advanced technologies; Supporting Minh Phu Seafood Corporation to launch and put into operation the project “High-tech application complex to develop efficient and sustainable shrimp chain in Kien Giang Province”.
