According to the Fisheries Information Centre, country’ aquaculture production in May 2018 was estimated at over 332.7 thousand tons, an increase of 6.4 per cent year on year. This brought the figure in the first five months of this year to over 1.395 million tons, up 6.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Aquaculture in the first five months

Generally, thanks to favorable weather, the production of shrimp was relatively high compared to the same period last year. The price of Tra fish in the market was high, the farmers made a great profit, and many households have expanded area.

Brackish water shrimp

Shrimp farming area in the first five months of this year was estimated at nearly 632 thousand hectares. Of which, black tiger shrimp and white leg shrimp farming areas were about 580 thousand hectares (up 1.6 per cent year on year) and nearly 52 thousand hectares, respectively. Shrimp yield production reached 176 thousand tons, an increase of 14.4 per cent compared to the same period last year. Of which, black tiger shrimp and white leg shrimp yields were about 85.8 thousand tons and 90.2 thousand tons, respectively

In May,  white shrimp prices continued to decline, size of  60 to 70 units per kilo was only VND100,000 to 110,000 per kilo (price in previous month was over VND 120,000 per kilo). Meanwhile, the price of black tiger shrimp was remained well. Black tiger shrimp size 30 units per kilo was VND 205,000 to 225,000. The reason for the reduction of shrimp price is due to the decrease in world market demand and the increasing supply in the shrimp producing countries.

Tra fish

In the first five months of the year, country’s Tra fish production reached 485.3 thousand tons, an increase of 3 per cent year on year. In May, the price of Tra fish material increased sharply, fluctuating over the range of VND 30,000 to 32,000 per kilo depending on quality, size and payment method. This was recognized as a very high price in many years, helping farmers getting a great profit. On the other hand, because of the high price of raw fish, the people in the provinces of Mekong Delta were massively spontaneous to enlarge shrimp culture area causing many risks, for instance, diseases, environmental pollution, and reduced production efficiency. Thus, it would affect the sustainable development of the Tra fish industry. Therefore, localities needed to plan the production planning, production quality assurance, market linkages to avoid risks when expanding production scale.
