Ba Ria – Vung Tau province strives to apply VietGAP to aquaculture (10-04-2018)

According to Ba Ria – Vung Tau provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural, currently total aquaculture area in the province was more than 7,500 ha. Of this figure, there were 2,215 ha spending for fresh water farming and the rest was for salty and blackish water farming with annual aquaculture production reaching nearly 19 thousand tons. Farmed species were plenty such as black tiger shrimp, white legged shrimp, grouper, giant sea perch, snake head fish, tilapia, etc.

In order to develop aquaculture in the sustainable way, over the past years Ba Ria – Vung Tau province has formed several concentrated farming areas such as Bau Sinh A and Bau Sinh B industrial shrimp farming areas (in Xuyen Moc District); salty water aquaculture area in Kim Dinh District and salty water aquaculture area in An Ngai town(Long Dien District).

Besides, the province’s fisheries sector has planned on reviewing aquaculture activities in the whole province; at the same time, it has been boosting progress of infrastructure construction at industrial farming areas and concentrated seed production areas in the province.

Additionally, the province was developing marine fish farming area, seaweed farming area, eco-mangrove farming area, etc to meet the demand of farmers and take fully advantages and potential in the province.

Regarding seafood processing, currently, there are 169 seafood processing enterprises, tens of which meet the HACCP standard with production capacity of 250 thousand tons per year. Among these, there are 28 enterprises which are eligible for exporting to EU and the rest are eligible for exporting to U.S, Japan, South Korea and Russia.

According to the Ba Ria – Vung Tau province’s aquaculture development plan, 80 per cent of the province’s aquaculture products would be managed under VietGAP standard by 2020. Besides, it would reduce intensive and semi - intensive shrimp farming area while increasing advanced extensive shrimp farming, ecological shrimp farming towards the application of high technology to aquaculture which would contribute to increasing productivity, ensuring food hygiene and safety and minimizing chemical substances and antibiotics in aquaculture.

In the coming time, Ba Ria Vung Tau province will continue to diversify forms of aquaculture, processing and apply high technology to aquaculture in order to increase productivity and seafood product quality; at the same time, enhance competition capacity and boost seafood exports, according to Ba Ria – Vung Tau provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural.
