Vietnamese aquaculture sector in 2017 (04-01-2018)

According to the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development (MARD) country’s aquaculture production in 2017 was estimated at over 3.83 million tons, an increase of 5.2 per cent year on year. In general, areas of aquaculture in 2017 increased; meanwhile production and consumption of tra fish and brackish water shrimp have got positive development.

Brackish water shrimp

In 2017, shrimp industry hadmore favorable on weather conditions as well as consumption market. In this year, shrimp farming area was estimated at nearly 705.9 thousand hectares. Of which, black tiger shrimp and white legged shrimp farming areas were about 595.8 thousand hectares (up 1.3 per cent year on year) and nearly 110.1 thousand hectares (an strong increase of 10.1 per cent year on year), respectively. Shrimp yield production reached 701 thousand tons, an increase of 8.9 percent compared to the same period last year. Of which, black tiger shrimp and white legged shrimp yields were about 270.5 thousand tons and 430.5 thousand tons.

Compared to 2016, the shrimp industry in 2017 has got the better results. Although the supply was high, but the market demand was still abundant and the demand for export processing has increased, leading to the successful consumption of shrimp products in 2017. The price of shrimp material in 2017 was maintained at high levels for long duration. The average price of shrimp material is about 17 per cent to 20 per cent higher than the same period of 2016 depending on type and size.

Tra fish

In 2017, tra fish farming area was nearly 6.07 thousand hectares, equal to 103.1 per cent compared to the same period last year. Tra fish production reached over 1.25 million tons, an increase of 5.4 per cent year on year. In 2017, the price of tra fish fluctuated significantly.  Tra fish raw material prices have increased continuously over the months and much higher than last year. The price of tra fish in Mekong Delta was at the highest level of VND 28,400 to 29,300 per kilo, with those prices, profit that farmers have got (not including costs) raised about VND 7,000 to 8,000 per kilo. Moreover, high profit also motivated farmers to invest more in production, which helped improve production efficiency.
