DongThap: Effectiveness of the shrimp- rice cultivation model (14-12-2017)
Dong Thap Agriculture Extension Center said that in the recent time, rotational farming model of crayfish with rice (one rice crop - one shrimp crop) has been successfully applied by farmers in Dong Thap. This model has yielded VND 75 million per hectare, which has been implemented by 13 households in 3 districts of Tam Nong, Cao Lanh and Lap Vo in Dong Thap province (with total area was 20 hectares).
In order to increase the productivity and quality of products, in 2017 farmers who participate in the model ,are provided 50 percent of shrimp seed price, 100 percent of rice seeds, 30 percent of feed and fertilizer by Agriculture Extension Center
After 7 months of implementation model, the yield of shrimp reached 1,250 kilos per hectares with the average selling price of VND 180,000 per kilo (harvested weight was 20 unit per kilo). After deducting costs, the profit was VND 75 million per hectare. The yield of rice reached 3.5 tons per hectares and the average profit of rice was about VND 9 million per hectare. Compared with the traditional model in the area, the profit of this model is higher than about VND 2 million per hectares.
In fact, the cultivation of rice on shrimp land does not occur "conflict" in the production process. After raising a shrimp crop, the farmer will plant a rice crop and then the organic waste at the bottom of the pond after harvesting the shrimp will make the rice field fertile. Rice farmers apply only a small amount of fertilizer to meet the development needs of the plant, resulting in reduced production costs.
In contrast, after rice crop, pond bottom has been mineralized, so toxic substances reduce, cut germs in ponds, the environment is stable. So shrimp farming limited use of drugs, chemical and reduce production expense.
The shrimp production model of Mr. Ho Hoang Vu in Vinh Thanh commune, Lap Vo district produced more than 12 million shrimp seeds and after deducting his profit more than VND 500 million
Farmers implementing the model in 3 districts highly appreciated the model of shrimp-rice cultivation, which adapted to the local natural conditions, created clean products, ensured food hygiene and safety, in accordance with Agricultural production (GAP). Currently, shrimp farming area in Dong Thap is more than 708 hectares, harvesting more than 722 tons.
